Let me tell you the story of Blackjack. You see, he's a martial artist hero who has a special deck of cards that he throws at villains. These cards range from concussive explosive cards, and those that expand into a cellophane-esque entanglement, to razor sharp and lethal cards.

Ah, I miss playing superhero rpgs.

"I swear that this system (roll to get target number, then roll with modifier to see if you hit) seems really familiar to me. I’m sure I’ve encountered it elsewhere, likely in wargaming circles, but I cannot for the life of me remember or find it anywhere else."

I have the same feeling of deja vu. Might it have been something like Starfleet Battles, or one of the Steve Jackson games like Car Wars?

I can't wait for your review of Champions. Although I was aware of Superhero 2044 at the time and thumbed through V&V (a friend had a copy), Champions just blew me away. In my view it was a major conceptual upgrade to the whole role playing game genre - it was RPG 2.0 and I actually don't think it's been surpassed since, just tweaked a little. Anyway I will respect your chronological approach and wait patiently. 😁
