Thank you for the fantastic plug for Just The Axe, Ma'am. Any plug that turns into a meditation on the themes and subtext of Conan and Elric tales can go as long as you like, as far as I'm concerned.

God's Not Dead 3 is actually a "nice" one, despite killing off a major character at the beginning. But it didn't seem to resonate with the fan base, and they went back to conspiracy theories thereafter. What's interesting is that American faith-based films (except actual Bible stories like The Passion or Noah) rarely do well outside of the US, I suspect due to quirks in US fundamentalism like belief in the Rapture, or that God blesses capitalism specifically.

(Ironically I had the faith-based film beat at Forbes specifically because they were among the only films Scott did NOT cover)

I was hoping you'd add some commentary here and now I've got to see God's Not Dead 3. I do think that there is something quintessentially American to a lot of modern faith based films, and I think that's one of the major changes from the kinds of faith-based films Hollywood used to make. I think a part of that is because they are made specifically for their audience, rather than for the public at large. That can be a profitable strategy, but it also reduces reach.

Did you see The Shack? I really liked that one, and It was made with clear hopes of going mainstream, but the US faith-based audience turned on it because it depicted God as three people, each one representing part of the Trinity, and fundamentalists were outraged because God in human form can ONLY be Jesus and nothing else. And yet...almost the entire movie is a dream, and not to be taken literally! But if even a dream blasphemes against literalness, that's apparently a dealbreaker.

I'll have to watch The Shack. The faith based community reacted poorly to Frailty too. I can only think they didn't watch it to the end, as I said in our video discussion, because it's very clear about righteousness.

It's apparently okay for God to be an actual lion in Narnia, but not a black woman in some dude's dream. I don't wonder why, sadly...
