WRT HBO and Cinemax, weren't they partners rather than competitors? I recall them coming bundled together, while TMC and Showtime would have all the movies they didn't have.
I think you are right that they are a subsidiary, but it still seems odd. It would be like Taco Bell calling their one stop corner carts KFC. They are both Yum! Brands, but have a different focus. Cinemax has always been the "sketchier" brand. HBO was "Hey Beastmaster's On" while Cinemax was Skinemax.
